The third English translation of this very scarce scientific work by Amedee Guillemin, illustrated throughout. The third English language translation of this work, translated from the original French by Mrs. Norman Lockyer. Scarce in all English language editions.Illustrated with over four-hundred vignette woodcuts, and two colour plates. The photographic plate, however, is supplied in facsimile.Chapters in this scientific work cover topics including gravity, sound, light, magnetism and heat.With a prize bookplate to the front pastedown, dated 1880. In a full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing. Externally, smart, with rubbing to back strip head and tail and joints. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with pages 7-10 detached and loosely inserted. Pages bright and generally clean, but with the odd spot, most concentrated to page perimeters. Good.
