Item description from seller

This is an ex-library book with the usual markings. Apart from the library markings, the book is in very good condition, with a slight amount of shelf wear. The Fierce Pawns by Patrick A. Macrory. Published in Britain as Signal Catastrophe, and later reissued as Kabul Catastrophe and Retreat from Kabul. Macrory tells the story of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842), when the British and the East India Company invaded Afghanistan to install Shah Shuja on the throne and counter Russian influence in the "Great Game." The occupation of Kabul ended in uprising, the killing of William Macnaghten and Alexander Burnes, and the disastrous winter retreat of General Elphinstone's army and thousands of camp followers through the mountain passes, from which Dr. William Brydon famously reached Jalalabad as the lone survivor. A vivid narrative for research on British India, the Great Game, Afghan history, Dost Mohammad and Akbar Khan, and nineteenth-century colonial warfare.
