Illustrated. Original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. This was number 78 in The Family Library series. Boards are a little dirty and tips are exposed. A fair amount of foxing primarily on pages close to the boards, and darkening or tanning around text on all pages. Contains a number of engravings, charts, and diagrams embedded into the text. Ownership information on flyleaf and title page, in pencil. No other known marginalia. Chapters include an introduction to science, the earth in relation to the universe, celestial appearances, the atmosphere and its phenomena, atmospheric phenomena dependent on the distribution of heat, phenomena dependent on the distribution and conditions of light, phenomena dependent on terrestrial magnetism, the interior of the earth, land and water, and the superficial temperature of the earth. William Mullinger Higgins (1808-1882) was a fellow of the Geological Society and a lecturer on natural philosophy at Guy's Hospital. Hardcover, good condition. 408 pages, 18mo.
