This study of the life and work of the dynamic painter who shocked Rome and revolutionized its academic schools has come to be considered a standard work on Caravaggio. "A volume that brings us closer to the essence of Caravaggio's art than any previous book . By means of historical analysis, it establishes in what aspects of his style the essential originality of Caravaggio is to be sought, and from what sources it derived its force. The painter discected in these pages may be a trifle less sensational than the figure to which phrase-makers have introduced us, but he emerges as a greater, more purposeful and more intelligible artist." -- The Times Literary Supplement.
