Item description from seller

8vo. 8.25 x 5.25 inches. xxvii + [1] + 487 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper, which has some edge wear and small chips and ceases at head and tail of spine. On rear wrapper list of publications of the Star Book Company Szechuen Road. A little wear to extremities and page edge browning, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 9 plates at end and by text figures. Dr Marie Stopes (1880-1958) was a scientist and a campaigner for women's rights, who opened the first birth control clinic in Britain in 1921. Her pioneering work, Married Love (1918) brought the subject of birth control into the realm of public debate. Her subsequent title, Contraception, first published 1923, was a more academic study aimed at the medical and legal professions and includes an historical survey and an analysis of the varying methods of contraception existing at the time of writing. This version of the third edition of 1931 has no imprint and only the reference to the Star Book Company, Szechuen Road on the rear wrapper suggests that it was published in China and possibly in Szechuen (now Szechuan or Sichuan) Road, Shanghai, which was a commercial street in the city. MEDICINE WOMEN SOCIAL HISTORY MEDICINE ASIA 20TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED MEDICINE.
