From the Author
1. SCIENCE FAIR ORGANIZATION: A complete guide is provided for those starting a science fair or those looking to improve one. Science fairs have been around for a long time as a way to interest students in science and engineering through an exciting out-of-class experience. A successful fair has students leaving the building talking about their projects and what they plan for next year. There are many things to plan and execute for a successful fair, and the book gives details of events and strategies that have worked well. The floppy disc that you can obtain with the book includes all of the forms, announcements, fliers, etc. for the fair, and it includes a student handbook as a guide to the fair and performing a science fair project. In addition, the disc includes a computer program for assigning awards in a fair manner based on judges' evaluations. (This we have found to be a non-trivial task.)
2. EXPERIMENTS: A guide is provided for doing a science fair project that is an experiment and doing it by a scientific method. An experiment differs significantly from a demonstration, survey, or report. Experiments are the preferred type of projects at many science fairs and the only acceptable projects at some because they involve logic, reasoning, systematic method, and creativity. Experiments and scientific method are discussed in detail with examples in the book. Many project ideas are given, and ways to make a project stand out are presented.
We have found that science fairs and experiments can be work instead of fun without good organization, a good mix of events, community support, and instruction about experiments and scientific method. These items are all addressed in detail in "Not Just Another Science Fair."
Good Luck!
