Synaesthesia, literally meaning "union of the senses," is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sense produces an impression in a second sense. Synaesthetes might taste the words they pronounce, see colors when listening to music or smell the voices of people around them. Some five percent of the population is estimated to experience some form of synaesthetic reaction.

Layers of Reality is both a personal and a semi-scientific research study of the phenomenon of synaesthesia. In this volume, German photographer Anna Püschel, a synaesthete herself, questions her perception of reality. For this publication, she works through a large image database, testing and cataloguing her synaesthetic reactions. What emerges from Püschel's investigation is an engaging personal attempt to understand how we perceive and construct reality.

Synesthesie (‘vermenging van de zintuigen’) is een neurologisch fenomeen waar stimulatie van één zintuig leidt tot automatische en onwillekeurige waarnemingen bij een tweede zintuig of cognitieve verbinding. In een veel voorkomende vorm van synesthesie kunnen bijvoorbeeld letters of cijfers als inherent gekleurd worden ervaren. Mensen die al hun hele leven dit soort waarnemingen ervaren staan bekend als synestheten.

Er is weinig bekend over de oorsprong van synesthesie. Er wordt gesuggereerd dat het zich tijdens de jeugd ontwikkelt wanneer kinderen voor het eerst worden blootgesteld aan abstracte concepten.

Layers of Reality is zowel een persoonlijk als een semi-wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar synesthesie. Anna Püschel, zelf een synestheet, neemt kleuren waar als ze naar bepaalde beelden kijkt. The perception of letters or numbers as inherently coloured, for instance, is a common form of synaesthesia. People who report a lifelong history of such experiences are known as synaesthetes.

Little is known about the origin of synaesthesia. It has been suggested that the condition ­develops during childhood, when children are intensively engaged with abstract concepts for the first time.
