Synopsis
In The Discovery of the Netherlands, Henk van Os presents the finest examples culled from four centuries of Netherlandish landscape art. The Dutch artists were the first in Europe to reveal the beauty of their country's landscape. They transformed the flat countryside, with its winding waters, farmland, wooded groves and the ever-changing lofty skies into unforgettable scenes framed within their paintings, indeed - into art. Selecting 40 masterworks, Van Os demonstrates that what we currently find 'beautiful' in the Dutch landscape has been largely shaped by these artists.
In her contribution, Louise Fresco explains how these paintings reflect the human presence in the Dutch landscape down through the centuries.
