Synopsis
What is the current state of digital repositories for research output in the European Union? What should be the next steps to stimulate an infrastructure for digital repositories at a European level? To address these key questions, an inventory study into the current state of digital repositories for research output in the European Union was carried out as part of the DRIVER Project. The study produces a complete inventory of the state of digital repositories in the 27 countries of the European Union as per 2007 and provides a basis to contemplate the next steps in driving forward an interoperable infrastructure at a European level.

Repositories hebben de laatste jaren een sterke ontwikkeling doorgemaakt; steeds meer universiteiten, onderzoeksinstituten en hbo-instellingen plaatsen hun kennis en resultaten in repositories zodat deze via internet vrij toegankelijk zijn. In deze studie wordt het Europese repository landschap in kaart gebracht.
Het onderzoek toont dat in een zevental Europese landen al meer dan de helft van de universiteiten een repository heeft. Het DRIVER-project legt de basis voor een Europese repository-infrastructuur door een testbed te realiseren met ruim vijftig interoperabele repositories. Hiermee wordt het voor onderzoekers makkelijker om vrije toegang te krijgen tot wetenschappelijke resultaten. Het project wordt deels gefinancierd door de Europese Commissie.
