"From Hand to Hand" presents the relationship between European master jewelers and their apprentices through a selection of contemporary jewellery.The technical skills traditionally acquired in ateliers have enabled the production of precious jewellery that combines prestige and market value. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches: this book features works by 58 artisans from 3 generations who studied in several European countries. "From Hand to Hand" celebrates the transmission of traditions and knowledge from the past to the present. The words of the jewellers themselves, passing on the secrets of their trade, and those of their apprentices, accompany the photographs that depict their stunning creations.

About the Author
Carole Guinard is an exhibition curator and designer. A creator of jewellery and the founder of the NO gallery in Lausanne (1986-95), she is both the exhibition designer and curator of the collection of contemporary jewelry at MUDAC. Liesbeth den Besten is a freelance journalist and writes for Dutch and international art and design magazines. She is the chairwoman of the Francoise van den Bosch Foundation for contemporary jewellery. Monica Gaspar is an art historian and free-lance curator. She writes on jewelry and other artifacts in their position between art and design.

De main à main présente, par le biais d'une sélection de bijoux de créateurs européens, les liens qui se créent entre maîtres et élèves et ce qu'est la transmission d'un savoir. Seront donc choisis comme maîtres, des bijoutiers européens dont l'influence dans le monde du bijou contemporain est indéniable, non seulement parce que ce sont des professeurs remarquables mais aussi des créateurs marquants de leur temps. Quelle influence ont-ils eue sur leurs élèves? Que souhaitent-ils transmettre? Qu'en ont retiré leurs élèves? C'est à ces questions que ce catalogue cherche des réponses. Carole Guinard est commissaire et scénographe de l'exposition ; créatrice de bijoux, fondatrice de la galerie NØ à Lausanne (1986 à 1995), elle travaille comme scénographe depuis une dizaine d'années au MUDAC où elle est aussi responsable de la collection de bijoux contemporains. Liesbeth den Besten a étudié l'histoire de l'art et l'archéologie à l'université d'Amsterdam. Depuis 1984, elle travaille comme journaliste indépendante pour des journaux et des magazines d'art et de design hollandais et internationaux. Elle donne des conférences principalement sur le bijou contemporain et la céramique dans des écoles d'art, comme la Gerrit Rietveld Academie où elle a enseigné l'histoire de l'art en 2006-2007. Mònica Gaspar est historienne de l'art et commissaire d'expositions indépendante. Elle a reçu en 2001 le Design Award Premi Ciutat de Barcelona. Elle est membre de l'AICA (Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art, Paris) et de la FAD (Fostering of Arts and Design, Barcelone).
