Synopsis

Carved out of the Himalayan foothills by the Raja of Gorkha in the latter half of the 18th century, the Kingdom of Nepal was closed to foreigners until 30 years ago. As a result, although it is famed far and wide for the fighting prowess of her Gurkha soldiers and the mountaineering skills of her Sherpas, its turbulent history is virtually unknown in the West. In 1846, a young and ambitious general named Jang Bahadur Rana was appointed prime minister of Nepal. He promptly usurped the power and authority of the king and made the prime ministership hereditary within his family. This situation, analogous to that of the Shogun and the Emperor in contemporary Japan, was to last for 104 years until, in 1951, that regime was toppled and the power of the monarchy restored. This book tells the story of Nepal during the period between 1846 and 1951 during which Nepal was under the rule of the Rana family. It is chronological in structure, the framework for each chapter being the events that occurred during a specific prime ministership. Woven into the story is a series of studies of economic, political, social, military, administrative, legal and cultural issues. The book concludes with a postscript to Rana rule, and a final analysis and an assessment of the regime. Adrian Sever is the author of "Abode of the Gods: Travels in Nepal".
