Synopsis

Klever Govert Flinck (1615-1660) was one of the most acclaimed painters of his time in Amsterdam and one of the most outstanding portrait painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Even today he is regarded as one of Rembrandt's most famous and talented students. During his lifetime, his fame was greater and far surpassed that of his teacher. His patrons included not only the patriciate and magistrate of Amsterdam, but also the House of Orange, the House of Brandenburg and the Governor of Liechtenstein, Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen. His 400th birthday in 2015 is the occasion for the Museum Kurhaus Kleve to pay tribute to the work of Govert Flinck in a comprehensive exhibition that will be the first retrospective for over fifty years. For the exhibition, museums worldwide have provided loans: the Leiden Collection New York, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis The Hague, the Sinebrychoff Museum Helsinki, the Museum de Lakenhal Leiden, the Musée des Beaux-Arts Nantes, the Foundation Prussian Castles and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg Potsdam, as well as the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The exhibition and the accompanying catalog provide a new and long overdue look at the work of the German-Dutch Baroque painter Govert Flinck. In particular, his relationship to Rembrandt and his involvement in the social hierarchies of the clients are at the center of the presentation. The catalog is bilingual (German and English) and represents the current state of Govert Flinck research in a scientific and essayistic way. For this, international experts of the 17th century were recruited as authors.
