The eye is the dominating organ of our era. Our very culture pays tribute to the sense of seeing: an ever-increasing receptiveness, a visual expansion into the most diverse universes and into dimensions which are smaller in spatial terms yet even larger. The virtual and real possibilities at our disposal today have changed our understanding of reality. The Expanded Eye takes a look at the experimental side of art: here seeing means insight. Paintings, objects, installations, films and videos from the nineteen-forties to today are presented in a spectrum that takes equal account of the playful experiments of postwar art and the radically altered artistic premises of the twenty-first century.
With texts by Bice Curiger, Ina Blom, Diedrich Diederichsen, Kurt W. Forster, Al Rees, and Rudiger Wehner, this publication documents how the horizons have widened in art, as abstraction has become dematerialization which has in turn led us into "fluid," hybrid universes where very different levels of reality mingle. The removal of past barriers reflects the changed role of the artist as an explorer who has a playful side and who actively empathizes with the public at large.
The book also contains an anthology of texts from the most diverse subject areas - from artist statements by Lucio Fontana and Josef Albers to theoretical essays by Rudolf Arnheim and philosophical texts by George Kubler and Jonathan Crary.

Condition: Neu.
