Synopsis

He has a bookstore in Vienna, is thirty-eight, married, and in a strange way insecure, and that's why his wife sometimes hates him. Was that why she cheated on him? After the divorce, Daniel Haid flees from abandonment, the memories and from himself to friends to America. With the outbreak from everyday life, in the chaos of San Francisco, the world and counterworld of security and wealth, poverty and violence, a man's desperate search for his identity begins. Addicted to experiences, Haid plunges into the horrors of American reality, he registers every detail of lust and suffering in the mass of beggars, drinkers, and desperate, in encountering friends and women like a sleepwalker who stands outside his consciousness. For protection, he flees into foreign roles, preferably to those of Philipp Marlowe, the most human detective in crime literature, who always knows what to do. Was it this role that entangled him in a criminal case, a suspicion of murder? In panic, he flees to Los Angeles, pursuers and memories drive him further to Las Vegas and New York, until under the pressure of fear and threat, his dreamlike sense of reality turns into the self-felt reality, into the warmth of his own perception. A "strong feeling of love" wins over a long dream.
Gerhard Roth has written a modern development novel whose inner tension is driven by the outer tension elements of the crime story. The combination of poetry and reality that his "hero" loves at Stifter has also succeeded in this story of a self-discovery in the chaos of an alienated world.
