Tissue heterogeneity is a subject of interest in liver pathophysiology. Advances in the cell and molecular biology of the hepatocytes and sinusoidal cells have yielded insights into how liver cells differentiate and establish their functional compartmentation at the hepatic lobule level. This text contains a collection of reviews on the current cellular and molecular concepts supporting the functional units of liver tissue and their impact in disease. It describes interrelated hepatic cell functions of liver tissue functions and dysfunctions, providing a view of liver tissue functioning homeostasis.
