Synopsis

How to write when the words disintegrate in the mouth? What to do if your own country stands only for death and destruction?

Writer M., in European exile for a few months, breaks into the neighbouring country - a festival has invited her to readings. The journey is full of breakdowns: the intended connection cable does not exist, the charging cable of the phone is lost. No one is waiting at the border station in F. The contact with the organisers is canceled.

The layer fills them with relief. M. roams the city, and what she encounters are loud promises of freedom: an escape room, a traveling circus, a fleeting acquaintance - and in the end the long-awaited chance to get rid of her identity and disappear. But can this succeed?

The story takes place in the summer of 2023: Russia's war against Ukraine does not end. Metaphors and allusions, from Thomas Hobbes to Paul Bowles, permeate Stepanova's captivating, prose rich in perceptions and thoughts. Did she, the Nabokov reader, write an invitation to self-decapitation? It remains up to us, the readers, whether we want to understand their "jump" as an act of liberation or negation.
