Synopsis

The Internet realizes in an exemplary way the basic telematic technology of the information society, which has emerged from the fusion of digital media with the telecommunications infrastructure. But at the same time it symbolises in an almost paradigmatic way the ideas and ideals from which our current image of future society is composed. Decentralization, interactivity, multimediality, transnationality, and -culturality are some of the keywords to which the optimistic descriptions of the new era are attached; isolation and alienation, baseless commercialization of private and public spaces, and the emergence of new forms of digital colonialism and social class differences fear pessimists. More than a technology, the Internet has become a myth to which hope and fears are attached. This myth must be critically investigated.

The volume gathers contributions from authors who approach the phenomenon of the new network world from different perspectives of philosophical, economic, political and cultural questions. Thought as a critical introduction and continuation, the contributions are aimed at all those who want to better understand the present.
