Synopsis
Stargill, a farmer in the hills of Tennessee, is dying. He has let his sons call to him, so that they room the coffin for him, and while the old still wrestles with death, the four men meet in the house of their childhood to fulfill their father this last wish. Their women join forces to sew the casket casket, an American quilt made from the materials of Randall Stargill's life - like old ties, a precious scarf, his late wife's wedding dress.
But the preparations for the funeral do not remain undisturbed. The local property broker has already set sights on the yard of the Stargills. His offer triggers a bitter confrontation with the sons. Sharyn McCrumb captures the unique fascination of this mountainous region with its pristine forests and its people marked by relentless fate in a story that captivates the reader to the end.
