About the Author
Joann Sfar naît le 28 août 1971 à Nice, dans une famille moitié séfarade moitié ashkénaze, où on lui raconte toutes sortes de mythes et d'histoires. Dès qu'il sait par quel bout tenir un crayon, il se met à dessiner. Vers quinze ans, il commence à expédier aux éditeurs un projet de BD par mois, qu'on lui refuse au même rythme. C'est aussi vers cet âge qu'il rencontre ses "mentors", Fred, Baudoin et Pierre Dubois (le modèle du Minuscule Mousquetaire). "Ils m'ont mis dans la tête des trucs sains. Tout ce que je fais, c'est pour leur plaire". Au début des années 80, armé d'une maîtrise de philo mention TB obtenue pour faire plaisir à son père, il entre aux Beaux-Arts à Paris, où il suit les cours du département de morphologie et dessine des natures mortes vraiment très mortes, comme les enfants à deux têtes et autres monstres de la collection de Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, au Museum d'histoire naturelle. Il assiste même à des autopsies avec un copain légiste et dessine toutes sortes de boyaux. Ce qu'il tire finalement de cette expérience, c'est le plaisir de dessiner un être vivant, habillé, qui marche dans la rue. A 23 ans, surprise. Le même mois, Dargaud, Delcourt et l'Association répondent favorablement à ses envois. Depuis, il n'arrête plus. "La BD est quelque chose de compulsif, on doit en faire beaucoup. Et comme disait Charlier, c'est plus facile de mener dix histoires de front qu'une seule." D'où un foisonnement d'univers dont la cohérence est assurée par un cocktail très personnel de sentiment, d'humour et d'intelligence ― sans oublier un charme graphique à tomber par terre.
