Elle est aussi le miroir des conflits et des tensions de la société féodale - entre la justice et le droit, le service du suzerain et l'exaltation de soi, la défense de la foi et la fidélité au contrat vassalique-, et l'instrument d'une glorification des relations familiales (entre Charlemagne et son neveu Roland), guerrières (entre Roland et Olivier) ou amoureuses (entre Roland et Aude). Mais la fiction dépasse l'histoire : rude, violente et profonde dans l'expression des sentiments, elle confère aux figures héroïques une vraie réalité poétique et fait de ce chef-d'oeuvre l'une des plus hautes expressions du mouvement créateur qui anime alors le monde médiéval.
