A collector's limited edition of only 500 of this beautiful quarter bound, marbled covered book in a buckram slip case, signed by the editor.
An extraordinary relationship between one of the greatest writers of the 20th century and Gwen and Jacques Raverat, the granddaughter of Charles Darwin and her French painter husband who was dying of MS. This poignant friendship is portrayed in their complete correspondence and other writings and illustrated by photos and the Raverats’ wood engravings, paintings and drawings.
This is a friendship whose later substance and passion was entirely expressed by letter. But the book is not only a complete record of their correspondence, but includes much previously unpublished material. None of the Raverat letters, the extracts from Gwen Raverat’s other writings, her powerful sketches of her husband on his death bed, nor Jacques’paintings have been published before. There are facsimile reproductions of crucial letters, diary and journal entries.
