Well, it's about time Kevin's book finally saw the light of day!

I first became aware of Kevin's painting techniques through the marvellous little booklet he produced for the South London Warlords' annual "Salute" wargames convention many years ago. I was struck by his innovative and systemised approach to painting toy soldiers and riveted by the gemlike results his methods produced. Eventually I got in touch, one thing led to another, and Kevin ended up working for Foundry; painting toy soldiers, taking photographs, writing painting articles, and producing adverts and catalogues, at the same time as building and running our web site.

That was about eight years ago, and the first version of this book was written way back then. As work progressed on the project though, it soon became apparent that what we really needed to do, before producing a painting guide, was to manufacture our own paints with the range of colours and density of pigment needed to take full advantage of Kevin's cunning techniques. So once it seemed likely that the book might well be delayed for quite some time, we put the early version up on our web site as a free download.

Producing the paints took us a year or four. In the interim our ambitions for the contents of a painting and modelling guide grew, and what with having to sort out all those web pages and cast all those toy soldiers and get them out into the world, it's taken a little longer to repeatedly rewrite and expand Kevin's book than was originally anticipated.

Unfortunately, however well printed and presented this book may be, there's no way that it can show quite how dramatic any model painted by Kevin can be when you see it for real. Kevin's models seem to glow from within; I've never seen anything to match them in 40 years of sculpting, painting and collecting toy soldiers. So be sure to make your way to the next "Salute" in London and see Kevin and his work in the flesh.

We're very pleased that you're finally able to hold this book in your hands and hopefully take it home and treasure it, all the more so because it was written by undoubtedly the most genuine and enthusiastic man in the small but strangely intense world of toy soldiers.
