Teachers frequently complain that, when they talking to students in class, information goes in one ear and out of the other, with nothing happening inbetween! Listening has been neglected in education, in spite of it being the most frequently used skill in learning. This unique and practicle book seeks to redress this situation by treating listening as a thinking activity, and developing a step-by-step approach to its improvement, using knowledge about how the brain works.

Lend Us Your Ears:
explores the concept of listening as a process between people with very different status, experiences and roles, and outlines the issues that constrain its effectiveness in school
analyses why some children have particular difficulties in visualizing and verbalizing what they hear and read, and how this can lead to significant underachievement in school
considers the mental strategies involved in making images from words, retaining them and recalling them to make a response, and looks at techniques to help develop the process of listening and understanding
describes how listening transfers into recording, looking at how to take effective notes and write well-organized narratives using visualizing and verbalizing techniques
examines how reading can be taught with emphasis on developing meaning from the written word, as well as fluency, by encouraging readers to make pictures in the mind to connect up information and establish a personal overview of it
considers issues such as resources, pacing and practice activities, levels of ability and achievement, to help teachers develop effective classroom listening in their students.
