Combining Scottish conjectural history and Platonist metaphysics, this work has been largely ignored to date due to its complexity and unavailability. The first two volumes are concerned with mind and causation whilst the third covers the origin of language (the subject of Monboddo's other major publication). Volumes four and five bear the subtitle "history of man" and the final volume discusses the being and nature of God.
