Synopsis

In the years since the publication of the first edition, substantial contributions have been made to the understanding of spermatozoa and assisted reproduction in humans. The editors, therefore, have widened the scope of this book to include a multidisciplinary approach. This volume contains information which represents the collective experience of the andrology programmes at The Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, USA and the Tygerberg Clinic, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Many clinicians from these and other institutions have combined to produce this textbook on the subject of human spermatozoa in assisted reproduction. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section contains four chapters which provide the basic concepts involved in spermatology and fertilization. The second discusses in some detail the diagnosis of male factor problems. This includes difficulties at all stages in the reproductive process. In the final section the techniques used in assisted reproduction are reviewed.

While the book is targeted mainly at clinicians working in reproductive medicine, andrology, urology, general gynaecology, reproductive endocrinology and general endocrinology, it should also provide useful information for scientists and technical persons working in many related fields.
