Launched in 1999, Afterall is a journal of contemporary art that offers in-depth analysis of artists’ work, along with essays that broaden the context in which to understand it. Its academic format differentiates it from popular review magazines. In issue 47, featured artists are planned to include Gülsün Karamustafa, Armin Linke, Naeem Mohaiemen, and Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Thao-Nguyen Phan, and Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, among others.

About the Authors

Charles Esche is the director of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and co-editorial director and co-founder of Afterall.



David Morris is a writer, researcher, and teacher. He is a lecturer at University of the Arts, London.

Charles Stankievech is an artist, writer, and curator. He is associate professor and director of visual studies in the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. In 2011, he co-founded the art and theory press, K. in Berlin.
