A place for everything and everything in its place: In the case of Smart Storage, nailed to your recalcitrant teenage son's forehead. Never has tidying up seemed so trendy or so, well, young. This book is crammed with well-organised contemporary interiors chic enough to inspire the most slovenly reader. Best when it eschews excessive minimalism--time enough in the grave for a clutter-free interior--this book shows how the twin demands of storage and display can best be combined by the judicious use of attractive boxes, baskets, trunks, shelving, fitted and free-standing cupboards. The presiding ethic is a familiar one: If it's useful, it should be beautiful-- no harm, then, if it's on display. If it's by its very nature ugly--CDs and videos are the bane of modern living--then use storage that combines practicality with a certain originality and wit. The authors' grasp of psychology is, frankly, terrible: "Someone who throws everything on the nearest available surface," they say, "could benefit from a disciplined structure, [with] a labelled place for everything." Luckily their practical sense is spot-on as when they advocate small-storage-- miniature chests of drawers, wooden boxes, and the like--as a good way of combining clutter- control and display.
Of course, the hard part is getting up enough energy to get organised in the first place. "The first step," we are told, optimistically, "is to prune your possessions and throw out anything you no longer like or use." Next week's installment: World Peace. --Simon Ings
