Synopsis

Sweet Tea is a deeply intimate and emotionally rich collection of poetry and prose that follows a young woman's journey through trauma, identity, love, sisterhood, loss, and the long road toward self-rebirth. Written with raw honesty, sharp wit, and lyrical sensitivity, the book unfolds like a diary of survival-steeped in pain, poured with truth, and ultimately sweetened with hope. Told in thematic waves rather than chapters, each poem reveals another layer of lived experience. The early pieces explore childhood displacement, foster care, and the isolating feeling of growing up unseen or unsupported. Through vivid imagery and vulnerable confession, the author traces how abandonment shaped her voice, her spirit, and her understanding of strength. As the collection evolves, Sweet Tea becomes a celebration of womanhood-honoring Black beauty, challenging societal expectations, and uplifting the bonds of sisters, mothers, and friends who form chosen family. The author reflects on romance, heartbreak, desire, and the lessons learned from loving too deeply, too quickly, or too long. The lens widens to confront social realities: violence against Black boys, the pressures of social media, the emotional labor carried by women, and the lingering impact of the pandemic. Through it all, the author's voice remains steadfast-poignant, perceptive, and often warmly humorous-offering not just storytelling but affirmation. Ultimately, Sweet Tea is a healing journey. By the final pages, the narrator has reclaimed her voice, rediscovered her power, and embraced a future shaped not by her wounds but by an unwavering belief in her worth. Like tea, healing takes time-and this book invites readers to savor every drop.
