About the Authors

August Dillmann (1823-94) was born at Illingen, Wuerttemberg, and educated at the University of Tubingen, where he was a student of Heinrich Ewald. He produced catalogs of Ethiopic manuscripts, an edition of the Bible in Ethiopic, the Ethiopic edition of 1 Enoch (1851), 'Lexicon Linguae Aethiopiae' (1865), and 'Chrestomathia Aethiopica' (1866). He taught at the universities of Tubingen, Kiel, Giessen, and Berlin. In 1875-76 Dillmann was the Rektor of the University of Berlin, and in 1881 he was the President of the International Congress of Orientalists.


William B. Stevenson (1869-1954) was Professor at Glasgow University, Scotland. In 1943 he gave the prestigious Schweich Lectures at the British Academy, which were published as 'The Poem of Job: A Literary Study with a New Translation' (1947). He also revised Young's 'Analytical Concordance to the Bible' and translated August Dillmann's commentary on Genesis.
