Veteran author and journalist Ken Rappoport showcases athletes from Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball, to race car pioneer Janet Guthrie, the first woman to qualify for the Indy 500, to cyclist Lance Armstrong, who fought back from cancer to become a six-time winner of the Tour de France.
Each dramatic, action-packed profile shows how these talented athletes overcame serious challenges, like racism, sexism, serious illness, and congenital problems. About the Authors
Ken Rappoport is the author of dozens of sports books for young readers and adults. He was a writer for The Associated Press for thirty years, covering every major professional and college sport. He died in 2020.
KEN RAPPOPORT is the author of dozens of sports books for young readers and adults, including LADIES FIRST: WOMEN ATHLETES WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE and VILLAINS: THE BAD BOYS (AND GIRLS) OF SPORTS, TALES FROM THE TAR HEEL LOCKER ROOM, and biographies of Wayne Gretzky and Shaquille O'Neal. He has worked as an Associated Press writer for thirty years, covering every major professional and college sport. He lives in New Jersey.
