This is a handbook written for men and women who are either interested in going into a career or have just begun one in code enforcement. It begins by giving a historical background on code enforcement in cities, how it has changed over the years, and where it seems to be headed in the future. The rest of the book is devoted to giving general information and simple and straightforward advice or suggestions to the aspiring enforcement officer on how to handle difficult people and situations, manage code cases and politics, learn how to listen to their intuition, and realize how each person in this type of organization has special talents that can be used in achieving a successful code enforcement program in their city or county.

Sandra Moore has worked for the City of Escondido since September 1988. She was promoted to a code enforcement officer in 1995 and has worked in the capacity of Acting Senior Code Enforcement Officer and Acting Business License Supervisor periodically since 2001. She has attended numerous training and education seminars in this field and is certified as a code enforcement officer through SCACEO (Southern California Association of Code Enforcement Officials), which has recently changed its name to the statewide organization known as CACEO (California Association of Code Enforcement Officers). She has worked literally thousands of code enforcement cases and her experience and knowledge in the field reveals itself through her common sense approach to dealing with difficult people and situations in the field as well as handling the day to day stress related to this type of work. She has attended several neighborhood group meetings and has given presentations to the various citizen activist organizations in the community. Her purpose for writing this book was to provide insight, along with general information and ideas to men and women interested in going into a career, or just beginning one in code enforcement. Her hope is that the stress and burn out that so often occurs in this type of job can develop itself into a more positive career learning experience.
