His Ph.D., from the University of Chicago in 1971, is in business administration. He holds secondary appointments in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Organizational Behavior at his university. He was editor of Medical Care from 1983 to 1998. His research interests include clinical decision analysis, medical technology assessment, firms research, and the application of quality improvement methods to patient care. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1983.
