"For students and scholars alike, Masculinities in Theory offers the most comprehensive overview of masculinity studies available, with highly engaging discussions of the stakes, theoretical approaches, and future directions of this field."
Lewis Seifert, Brown University
"The first overview of its kind, Masculinities in Theory is an invaluable resource for students of all levels, as well as for scholars exploring the fields of gender and masculinity studies for the first time. Reeser's nuanced discussion introduces key theoretical concepts and approaches while also cogently exploring their limitations, evolution, and disciplinary history."
Jeffrey N. Peters, University of Kentucky
"Skillfully describing masculinity as an inherently multiple and unstable concept, ideology, and practice, Masculinities in Theory is an indispensable guide to understanding male (en)gendering in diverse works, contexts, and cultures."
David LaGuardia, Dartmouth College
Masculinities in Theory is a clear, concise, and comprehensive introduction to the field of masculinity studies from a humanities perspective. This interdisciplinary text includes discussions of feminist, queer, transgender, post-colonial, and ethnic studies in relation to masculinity to explore the question "What is masculinity and how does it work?"
Examining the ways in which the work of theorists like Butler and Foucault can be used to interpret and analyze masculinity, Todd Reeser introduces issues from cross-dressing to nation, covering the key theoretical approaches to the study of masculinity, and introducing new models. This is a much-needed introduction for students and scholars of cultural studies, literature, art, film, communication, history, and gender studies.
