"...a valuable addition to the subject. It combines much important basic material in one volume, but also offers a contemporary angle through its discussion of structural and functional genomics." Mark Parsons, University of Leeds "I particularly like how many topics are introduced in a two page piece, with the significant publications referenced on the same page." Brian Bahnson, University of Delaware "...an excellent teaching resoure for undergraduates ... covers a broad range of topics in this expanding field...This book definitely achieves its goal of being easy to learn from. All the elements are there..." Catherine Brean, University College London, IJBCB, January 2004
Introducing a new cutting edge book on protein structure and function that is an ideal introduction for students and a must for all reading lists.
Protein Structure and Function considers the key concepts of protein structure and function and the relationship between sequence, structure and function with clear, concise explanations and full colour illustrations.
The book is divided into five chapters:
Chapter 1 – From Sequence to Structure – introduces the principles of protein structure and folding, with the emphasis on the biophysical properties of proteins that determine their folding and structure
Chapter 2 –From Structure to Function – describes the principles of the main biochemical functions of proteins, namely binding and catalysis, with a short section on the properties of structural proteins
Chapter 3 – Control of Protein Function – focuses on the regulation of protein function and contains concise descriptions of all of the regulatory mechanisms that operate on proteins, from PH to phosphorylation, with several sections on protein switches based on nucleotide hydrolysis
Chapter 4 – From Sequence to Function – introduces the basic principles whereby structure and function are deduced from sequence, with illustrative examples
Chapter 5 – Structure Determination – outlines the methodology of X–ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy and how data collected by these methods are interpreted.
