Synopsis

This volume provides an overview of adaptive filtering, covering as many algorithms as possible in a unified form that avoids repetition and simplifies notation. It is suitable as a textbook for senior undergraduate or first-year graduate courses in adaptive signal processing and adaptive filters. The philosophy of the presentation is to expose the material with a solid theoretical foundation, to concentrate on algorithms that really work in a finite-precision implementation and to provide easy access to working algorithms. Hence, practicing engineers and scientists should also find the book to be a useful reference. This second edition contains a substantial amount of additional material: two new chapters on nonlinear and subband adaptive filtering; linearly constrained Weiner filters and LMS algorithms; LMS algorithm behaviour in fast adaptation; affine projection algorithms; derivation smoothing; and MATLAB codes for algorithms. An instructor's manual, a set of master transparencies and the MATLAB codes for all of the algorithms described in the text are also available. The volume should be of primary interest to those working in signal processing, communications and circuits and systems. It should also be of interest to those working in power systems, networks, learning systems and intelligent systems.

Review

From the reviews of the third edition: "This text concentrates on studying on-line algorithms, those whose adaptation occurs whenever a new sample of each environment signal is available. ... This edition also includes basic introductions to nonlinear adaptive filtering and blind signal processing as natural extensions of the algorithms ... . The book is of great importance for digital signal processing undergraduate and graduate courses in universities." (George S. Stavrakakis, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1155, 2009) "The book titled ‘Adaptive Filtering: Algorithms and Practical Implementation,’ Third Edition, by Paulo S. R. Diniz replaces two previous editions. This new edition has improved significantly upon those two editions. ... The book is also very practical. To attest to its suitability as a teaching text, the author has given a number of carefully developed examples which are useful ... to students. ... Overall, the book is excellent for teaching the subject of adaptive signal processing and enhances the landscape of textbooks on the subject." (Tokunbo Ogunfunmi, IEEE Communications Magazine, October, 2009)

About the Author

Paulo S. R. Diniz was born in Niteroi, Brazil. He received the Electronics Engineer degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1978, the MSc degree from COPPE/UFRJ in 1981, and the PhD from Concordia University, Montreal, PQ, Canada, in 1984, all in electrical engineering. Since 1979, he has been with the undergraduate Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at the UFRJ. He has also been with the graduate Program of Electrical Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ since 1984, where he is presently a Professor. He has also served as undergraduate course coordinator and as chairman of the graduate department. From January 1991 to July 1992, he was a visiting Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, Canada. In 2002 he served as Melchor Endowment Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Notre Dame, USA. Hehas taught short courses at numerous institutions around the world. His teaching and research interests are in analog and digital signal processing, adaptive signal processing, digital communications, wireless communications, multirate systems, stochastic processes and electronic circuits. He has published over 250 refereed papers in some of these areas, has written two books and has received awards for best papers and technical achievements. He is also a Fellow of IEEE (for fundamental contributions to the design and implementation of fixed and adaptive filters and electrical engineering education) and has served as associate editor for the following journals: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing (1996 1999), IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (1999 2002) and Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing (1998 2002). He was a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society for the years 2000 to 2001 and served as distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004.
