This volume is a response both to the increasing interest in multilingual phenomena and lexical issues in language learning. It is of interest to scholars and graduate students interested in bi- and multilingualism, second and multiple language acquisition, language processing and language learning, mental lexicon, applied linguistics, psycho- and neurolinguistics and language teaching.
Recent research on third language acquisition and trilingualism has made clear that most multilingual studies actually deal with vocabulary learning or the lexicon. So far books on the mental lexicon have mainly been concerned with two languages in contact. This book is unique because it explores the multilingual lexicon by providing insights from research studies conducted in psycholinguistics, applied linguistics and neurolinguistics. It goes beyond the use of two languages and thus concentrates on a new and developing area in linguistic research. The different perspectives included in this volume provide a link to the mainstream work on the lexicon and vocabulary acquisition and will stimulate further debate in these areas and in the study of multilingualism.

Issued without a dust jacket. -- This volume presents a collection of scholarly papers investigating the mental processing and organisation of vocabulary in individuals who speak more than two languages. The text moves beyond traditional bilingualism research to explore the specific complexities of the multilingual lexicon, focusing on how the acquisition of a third or fourth language interacts with previously known linguistic systems. It integrates diverse perspectives from psycholinguistics and applied linguistics to examine the interaction between different languages during speech production and comprehension. The contributors analyse empirical data on cross-linguistic influence, lexical retrieval, and the theoretical principles of multilingual processing, including a chapter by Ulrike Jessner that introduces the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism (DMM). Specific chapters address the role of metalinguistic awareness, the influence of language typologies on the mental lexicon, and the impact of the age of acquisition on vocabulary development. By evaluating how the mind manages an expanding network of meanings and forms, the book establishes a theoretical framework for understanding the dynamic and non-linear nature of language growth in multi-competent speakers.
