The commander of the infamous Abu Ghraib prison speaks out for the first time. Since demoted for the damaging admissions made in this book, Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski tells the real story of the tragic and shameful events of Abu Ghraib. Abu Ghraib's now-famous tales of horrific prisoner abuse became the focal point of what went wrong in Iraq and exposed a national nightmare. Now Janis Karpinski, commander of that prison, tells for the first time the inside story of what happened and, more importantly, why it happened. Through her dramatic personal experience, Karpinski discloses corruption in the military among a potpourri of ill-equipped regulars, reservists and national guards thrown together on a guerrilla-infested battlefield with no clear lines of authority. She argues that much of the blame for Abu Ghraib goes to the very top of the chain of command - Rumsfeld himself - arguments for which she has subsequently been demoted.
