On April 9, 1942, American forces on the Bataan Peninsula surrendered unconditionally to the Japanese army. Thousands of Americans and Filipinos were captured and marched to Cabanatuan. Hundreds were brutalised, tortured and killed along the way in what became known as the Bataan Death March. The camp was notoriously worse. Of the 9,000 Americans who passed through its gates, almost 3,000 would end up buried there. In January 1945, 121 Army Ranger volunteers, aided by Filipino rebels, slipped 30 miles behind enemy lines, where they took the guards of the camp and liberated hundreds of debilitated men, many of whom could no longer walk, transporting them back to American lines. Only two rangers were killed in the operation. "The Great Raid" is a testimony to remarkable resilience in the face of great deprivation and bravery in the face of opposition. Weaving the remarkable accounts of the survivors with invaluable military scholarship, Breuer recreates a stunning operation in vivid detail.
