Excerpt from The Tides and Kindred Phenomena in the Solar System
IN 1897 I delivered a course of lectures on the Tides at the Lowell Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, and this book contains the sub stance Of what I then said. The personal form of address appropriate to a lecture is, I think, apt to be rather tiresome in a book, and I have therefore taken pains to eliminate all traces of the lecture from what I have written. A mathematical argument is, after all, only organized common sense, and it is well that men of science should not always expound their work to the few behind a veil of technical language, but Should from time to time explain to a larger public the reasoning which lies behind their mathematical notation. To a man unversed in popular exposition it needs a great effort to shell away the apparatus of investigation and the technical mode of speech from the thing behind it, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Lowell.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the scientific principles behind tides, including their impact on the Earth's surface and their role in shaping our planet's history. The author, an esteemed scientist, delves into the intricate relationship between the Moon, Sun, and Earth, explaining how their gravitational forces generate the rhythmic rise and fall of ocean waters. The book also uncovers the fascinating phenomenon of seiches, a type of standing wave that occurs in lakes and enclosed bodies of water, providing a unique perspective on fluid dynamics. Through meticulous observation and analysis, the author unveils the secrets of these natural occurrences, offering valuable insights into the dynamic forces that shape our world. This book expands our understanding of celestial mechanics and fluid dynamics, showcasing the intricate interplay between the Earth and its celestial neighbors. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
