Excerpt from The Unity of the Episcopate Considered, in Reply to the Work of the Rev. T. W. Allies, Entitled, the Church of England Cleared From the Charge of Schism: Upon Testimonies and Councils of Fathers of the First Six Centuries
Upon this I Observe, in the first place, that to prove the English Church to be in schism - I say nothing at present of the Eastern, nor of the assumption which is made in identifying the two cases - it is not necessary to establish Bellarmine's doctrine, of the truth of which Mr. A. Demands to be furnished with proof, as though the charge could not be sustained upon any ground short of it. Catholic divines, who dissented from Bellarmine's proposition, were as strong in their condemnation of the Anglican Church as were any of their oppo nents and that upon a View of the unity and the constitution of the Church, which all were agreed in regarding as fundamental.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the principles of unity in the episcopate as a way of exploring the relationship between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church. The author argues that the Church of England's claims to be in schism are unfounded, and that its separation from Rome is based on a misunderstanding of the nature of the episcopate. The book draws on the writings of the early Church Fathers and councils to support its arguments, and explores the theological and historical dimensions of the relationship between the two churches. Ultimately, the book argues that the unity of the episcopate is essential to the unity of the Church, and that the Church of England's separation from Rome is a violation of this principle.
