Formative practices can motivate students, enhance their self-regulation, and help find a better balance between education and assessment. However, the successful implementation of formative practices and feedback in lessons begins with a well thought out educational design. In this book, the authors outline the implementation principles to which formative action must adhere to be of practical and substantive significance. They also explain how educators can use feedback more effectively and efficiently, and the essential role of instilling a shared sense of quality.
This book is for teachers, educators, leaders, and curriculum developers from primary to higher education who want to successfully integrate formative practices into their daily teaching methods.

René Kneyber (1978) is a former mathematics teacher with a significant impact on the educational landscape in the Netherlands. With a passion for education, Kneyber dedicated himself to not only imparting mathematical knowledge to his students but also to influencing educational policy and practices on a broader scale. His expertise and commitment to improving education led to his appointment as a crown member of the Onderwijsraad (Education Council) in the Netherlands, a prestigious position he held for eight years.
Kneyber is also known for his contributions to the public discourse on education through articles, books, and participation in educational debates. He advocates for a balanced approach to education, emphasizing the importance of rigorous academic standards while also recognizing the need for innovative teaching methods that cater to diverse student needs.
Valentina initially embarked on her career as a history and philosophy teacher in secondary education. Over the years, she held diverse roles within secondary education, accumulating a lot of experiences. In higher education, she served as an assessment expert at an applied university's teacher training program.
Valentina's journey into formative action began with the master's program 'Learning and Innovation,' eventually becoming her area of expertise. Collaborating with René Kneyber and Dominique Sluijsmans, she co-authored a book on formative action and curriculum design. Together, they founded the highly successful teacher training organization 'Toetsrevolutie' or 'Formative Action School.' Their impactful work has led to the successful implementation of formative action and feedback processes in secondary education, and they now share their expertise to assist organizations across the Netherlands.
As an educational consultant, Valentina travels extensively throughout the country, delivering engaging keynotes, workshops, and training sessions for teachers.
