When are they compatible with the internal market? When do they pose fiscal or nonfiscal trade barriers? And are such trade barriers justifiable? This book answers such questions from a theoretical and a practice-oriented point of view, and it aspires to elucidate how EU primary law should apply to support schemes. It critically analyses case law and it interprets and examines the practical application of primary EU law, secondary State aid legislation, as well as soft law State aid guidelines.

About this title

About the Author

Theodoros G. Iliopoulos is a lawyer with a specialisation in energy law and economics and the regulation of energy transition. He is a visiting professor at Hasselt University and a researcher of Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) and he has worked as an adjunct professor and a visiting professor on EU law, energy law and environmental law at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and the University of Athens. He has also participated in research projects of Columbia University and the European Commission. He has studied law at the University of Athens (LLB, LLM), Utrecht University (LLM), Hasselt University (PhD), and the University of Maastricht (PhD).
