The work is aimed at growers and botanists. In addition to plant descriptions, there are details of the plants' uses, cultural requirements and place in garden design or landscape. Keys to all substantial genera are included, as well as nomenclature and references for further reading. There is a botanical introduction and glossary and a note on the general question of hardiness and "hardiness zone" ratings as applied to the British Isles, where local conditions can be notoriously variable.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Three oversized hardcover volumes with DJs. Green paper over boards with gold lettering on spines. Green DJs with darker green lettering and illustrations. No date on title page, copyright page dated 1985. Volumes I, II, and III are 448, 445, and 510 pages, respectively. In very good condition. Covers are clean and sharp with minimal shelf wear to edges and corners of boards and head and foot of spines. The back cover of Vol. III has a few light marks. Bindings are strong and square. Embossed stamp for the personal library of Donald H. Voss on the title page and last page of each volume. Pages are free of marks or tears. DJs remain clean and glossy with very little wear to edges- all fit snug to boards. Overall this set is in excellent shape. Black and white illustrations and photographs featured throughout.
