It argues that the reader must reclaim those traits which have been traditionally labelled feminine and make them the province of all humanity. As human beings we must uncover the true power and so empower ourselves and all people. The book was written in the 1970s during the second wave of feminism. Feminist consciousness flowered as women, both lesbian and heterosexual, struggled to articulate and affirm "womanness" through exploring our strengths, our values and our ways of knowing and being. The politics of the 60s and 70s emerged, in part, out of the passion of women seeking liberation.
