The Luminous Interval accompanies the Guggenheim Museums eponymous exhibition of works drawn from the Dimitris Daskalopoulos collection. Daskalopouloss collecting practices are inspired by the writings of the Greek philosopher Nikos Kazantazakis, who envisioned life as the luminous interval bridging the twin abysses of birth and death. During this time, struggle and distintegration are necessary prerequisites to creative production and renewal. Balancing renderings of chaotic fragmentation with forms defined by geometric containment and restraint, the works explore the coexistence of hope and despair within the human condition with a particular focus on concepts of alienation, trauma, cultural identity and the human body in states of fecundity and decay. Encompassing works by more than thirty artists in a broad range of media, the result is a survey of some of the most salient artistic developments of the past few decades. The fully illustrated catalogue features an interview with Daskalopoulos, critical essays by philosopher Simon Critchley and art critic Brian Sholis, and short texts on all of the exhibited works.

About the book >.>.> The Luminous Interval: The D Daskalopoulos Collection by Nancy Spector explores a significant private art collection showcased at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. This exhibition presents a curated selection of artworks that reflect some of the most notable developments in contemporary art, offering insight into the vision of collector Dimitris Daskalopoulos. The collaboration between the private collector and the museum aligns with the institution's mission to enhance critical discourse, conserve art, and inspire cultural engagement among diverse audiences.Central to the exhibition is the principle that underlines the selected pieces, which primarily consist of sculptures and installations. These works articulate the dual nature of creativity: a driving force for human advancement, coupled with an acute awareness of its ephemeral essence. Visitors may find themselves captivated not only by the scale and nature of the artworks but also by how the collection prompts reflection on the practice of collecting itself. It showcases Daskalopoulos's determination and vision in assembling a group of art that engages with timeless questions that have concerned humanity throughout history.A visit to The Luminous Interval promises a distinctive opportunity to encounter this dynamic and challenging ensemble of artworks, offering a glimpse into the creative spirit they encapsulate. As articulated by Patxi Lopez, Lehendakari of the Basque Government and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Foundation, this exhibition encourages viewers to appreciate the boldness and depth of the collection while considering the broader implications of artistic expression in contemporary society.
