Fet presents research based upon the homogeneous computing media approach developed in Russia. He discusses specialized distributed functional structures in which direct mapping of algorithms into schemes is accomplished. Reviews basic problems involved in processing huge amounts of data in connection with high-performance computers. A succinct survey of parallel computing systems, the synthesis and analysis of distributed functional structures, arithmetic and non-numerical processing, data transfer and permutation are among the topics covered. Includes several examples which demonstrate applications of cellular microprocessors in computing systems.

This text's approach to the organization of massively parallel processing is based on the utilization of cellular arrays of a specific sort, called distributed functional structures (DF-structures). These structures are related to the well-known content addressed memories, but provide immediate realization of an extensive nest of data processing functions. In contrast to the classical cellular automata, which are universal but redundant, the DF-structures are specialized but economical. The author argues that they correspond in the best way to the nature of up-to-date VLSI technology. This work discusses the problems of design and analysis of DF-structures, offering numerous examples of their application to important numerical problems, non-numerical processing, and switching of data arrays. The author proposes that DF-structures could constitute a basis of a new type of VLSI chips - cellular microprocessors.
