Synopsis

Space Invaders explores the work of 15 British architectural practices, revealing new and sometimes unfamiliar directions in the country's architectural production. With refreshing irreverence and deft pragmatism these practitioners have systematically challenged our idea of what architecture is. They have shown us not only that architecture need not be 'forever' (Urban Salon's 5-year office block in Central London), it can be democratic (MUF's consultations with local communities), and it need not even involve buildings (East's street furniture). Perceiving themselves as spatial designers, many of these architects have applied their expertise to dealing with a range of urban issues, reading the city, or at least parts of it, as a structure in need of clarification and re-organisation. Space Invaders is a British Council International Touring Exhibition, launched in Lisbon in September 2001 as part of the Lisbon Experimenta Design Biennial 2001.
