Using numerous examples, this book helps physicists and engineers to solve partial differential equations (PDEs), by using finite element analysis (FEA), occurring in various fields of physics, such as gravity, heat conduction, electricity and magnetism, elastic deformation and liquid flow. The examples are treated by means of a novel program (PDEase), but it is not necessary to have this software available to make the most of the power of FEA and to gain insight into the phenomena connected with fields. The work also suggests how to use numerical techniques to introduce functions of two variables and to illuminate the concepts of vector calculus for the benefit of beginners. Undergraduate students of physics or engineering may find this book suitable as a companion to ordinary textbooks which present the theory of the various fields in detail. They can work through the examples and problems on a PC, either individually or in a group under supervision.
