Synopsis

In ignoring the importance of colonial trade in the embryonic stage of international trade development, it is argued, a serious gap has been created in the explanatory structure of international trade theory. This study is an attempt to fill that gap by examining the different properties that distinguish colonial trade from international exchange. In considering the transition from colonial to independent status, the author seeks to demonstrate some of the possible theoretical effects of exogenous colonial resource management and to examine the implications particularly for the trade gain situation that obtains on the conferment of political independence, when formal international trade is commenced.
