Focuses on the American writer's development of child characters, including Joe Christmas, Quentin Compson, Thomas Sutpen, and Isaac McCaslin in childhood and adolescence. Draws on the Bildungrsroman tradition and 20th-century theories of human development to examine his early dysfunctional children and the normal ones he created late in his career.
